EL SUEÑO DE GRANADA ART WORLD

THE
CURE
In 1989 the group The Cure released their new album Disintegration. An album that breaks his style so far, towards darker music, a reflection of the mood of its leader Robert Smith, who had just turned 30 years old. His new album was bleak, decadent and absolutely groundbreaking.
"The others thought I had lost my mind. They were caught up in the idea that we were becoming a famous band, and they didn't understand that the music I wanted to make was actually moody and dejected. They all expected me to write songs like 'Just like. heaven. 'They thought we were going to keep things light with an occasional bit of pessimism, but we did the opposite. "
Coincidentally, this sincere, melancholic, almost suicidal album, of finished, impossible, chimerical loves, managed to reach many more people, and the best musical positions. This despite the fact that his themes are very extensive and intense, recreating himself in claustrophobic, obsessive environments, landscapes of life, moments.
“I feel like we have neglected one aspect of our music. The most beautiful is still a record that you can sit back and enjoy alone. Those albums that after listening to them you have the feeling that it really is a richer experience, contrary to our last albums that were good, but didn't really touch anyone deeply.
Robert Smith had confessed that this must be his last album, all of his idols had made their best achievements before that age. "I wanted to finish it all before turning 30, the day after turning 29 I thought 'on the next birthday I will be 30'. It's like a paradox, the younger you are, the more you worry about getting old."
But perhaps his success and his continued inspiration made him reconsider his idea, creating new albums with an unmistakable and inimitable style.

PLAINSONG
I think it's dark and it looks like rain' you said
'And the wind is blowing like it's the end of the world'
you said
'And it's so cold it's like the cold if you were dead'
And then you smiled for a second
'I think I'm old and I'm feeling pain' you said
'And it's all running out like it's the end of the world'
you said
'And it's so cold it's like the cold if you were dead'
And then you smiled for a second
Sometimes you make me feel like I'm living at the edge of the world
Like I'm living at the edge of the world
'It's just the way I smile' you said

“The essence of this album is the disgust for the loss of the ability to feel deep feelings as one gets older. That is the disintegration I am referring to. I'm worried about that, just like everyone else I know my age. "
“I had Plainsong's words written down, but I didn't worry about the beat or the rhyme. The phrases were all there. When we rehearse the music, I think, 'This piece of music will go with these words. And when I'm putting the pieces together, I sit in my room and listen to the tape over and over again thinking how it should go, until I don't have to read it. Then I stand in front of the microphone, I turn off all the lights, and what comes out is. "
“We haven't really made that much dark music over the years. I often found our music uplifting. But after writing the songs, you forget them. Every song that leaves deep imprints is a positive experience, even if it gives you a deep sense of despair. At least you feel something new, you are not dull, and no matter how paradoxical it may seem. "
Andres Cabanillas
I think this song talks about the end of a love relationship. Everything is dark, it seems that it is raining, you have a feeling of cold, and it seems that the world is ending, a world that you created but now appears cold and broken. A smile is what remains, melancholy for a moment, which relives the past. "
"And it's all running out like it's the end of the world"

LULLABY
On candystripe legs spiderman comes
Softly through the shadow of the evening sun
Stealing past the windows
Of the blissfully dead
Looking for the victim shivering in bed
Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and
Suddenly!
A movement in the corner of the room!
And there is nothing I can do
When I realise with fright
That the spiderman is having me for dinner tonight
Quietly he laughs and shaking his head
Creeps closer now
Closer to the foot of the bed
And softer than shadow
And quicker than flies
His arms are all around me
And his tongue in my eyes
"Be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy
Don't struggle like that
Or I will only love you more
For it's much too late to get away
Or turn on the light
The spiderman is having you for dinner tonight"
And I feel like I'm being eaten
By a thousand million shivering furry holes
And I know that in the morning I will wake up
In the shivering cold
And the spiderman is always hungry...

Inspired by terrifying stories and songs related by family members, Robert Smith wrote a tale about terrible dreams and giant child-eating spiders, which was captured in the video for "Lullaby", which was awarded at the 1990 Brit Awards. It is the first from the album. "That's the kind of lullaby my father used to sing when he was younger. There was always a horrible ending, something like, 'Sleep now, pretty baby,' followed by 'Or you'll never wake up.'

"We thought it was pretty commercial. I remember when Robert finally sang it and it was all about spiders and death, we were like, 'what's that?"
Smith says the lyrics were inspired by his nightmares and the twisted songs his father used to sing to him. "I used to do it and they always had a horrible ending. They were something like, 'Go to sleep now, my boy, or you'll never wake up.'
There were other family influences "I had an uncle who was very strange, also named Robert! Who delighted in finding as many ways to scare me as possible. One of his favorites was to whisper dark stories in my ear, next to the bed. These often They were talking about a horrible child-eating creature called 'Spider-Man'. One night, he even climbed out of my bedroom window after the lights went out ... I screamed so much it seemed like days. "
This explains the reference to the figure of the arachnid monster "When I realize with fear / That the spiderman has me for dinner tonight / In silence he laughs and shakes his head / And I feel as if they are eating me".
At the time of recording the vocal track, Smith thought of a desperate interpretation in the face of the atrocities he recounts, whispering the words as if he were having a nightmare, which is clearer when listening to the take with the voice he recorded before finding the final one. , which is heard on the deluxe edition of Disintegration.
All this imagery appears in the video clip for "Lullaby", created by Tim Pope from this idea of the song. "The whole video revolved around Robert in a kind of dream sequence with some tin soldiers appearing from time to time.
LAST DANCE
I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending our last dance together
Expectant too punctual but
Prettier than ever
I really believed that this time it's forever
But older than me now more constant more real
And the fur and the mouth and the innocence
Turned to hair and contentment that hangs in
Abasement a woman now standing where once
There was only a girl
I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
The walking through walls in the heart of December
The blindness of happiness
Of falling down laughing
And I really believed that this time was forever
But Christmas falls late now flatter and colder
And never as bright as when we used to fall
All this in an instant before I can kiss you
A woman now standing were once there was only a girl
I'm so glad you came
I'm so glad you remembered
To see how we're ending our last dance together
Reluctantly cautiously but
Prettier than ever I really believed
That this time it's forever
But Christmas falls late now, flatter and colder
And never as bright as when we used to fall
And even if we drink I don't think we would kiss
In the way that we did when the woman was only a girl
"At the beginning he says 'I really thought this time was forever' probably talking about when he was with her being younger, and at the end 'I really think this time is forever' then he talks about not being with her anymore now that time is forever.
"I think it talks about that reaction of seeing someone again and reliving that passion, but also realizing that things have changed and understanding that it is no longer possible. The fact that it starts with 'I'm so glad' makes make this song even sadder.
He's with a person he's still madly in love with, but she's not the same anymore. And while he remembers over and over how much fun they had and how beautiful she was, and still is, he knows that he will never be able to recreate the love and passion they had then. It's about that sad change and losing the past.
Talk about the good times you had with that girl. And how he sees her now after a few years, now that she's older. He still thinks she's beautiful. But that fact that she's 'older' doesn't let him get over that she probably changed and moved on. And in the end, he wants things to be the way they used to be between them. 'And never as bright as when we used to fall, even if we drank I don't think we would kiss the way we did' ... such a sad song.

FASCINATION STREET
Oh it's opening time
Down on Fascination Street
So let's cut the conversation
And get out for a bit
Because I feel it all fading and paling
And I'm begging
To drag you down with me
To kick the last nail in
Yeah I like you in that
Like I like you to scream
But if you open your mouth
Then I can't be responsible
For quite what goes in
Or to care what comes out
So just pull on your hair
Just pull on your pout
And let's move to the beat
Like we know that it's over
If you slip going under
Slip over my shoulder
So just pull on your face
Just pull on your feet
And let's hit opening time
Down on Fascination Street

I think it's about a woman that he is in love with, not necessarily a relationship, maybe one of those tricky things when there's a person you've been obsessed with for a long, long time. A good friend may have called you "friend" or whatever you want to call it. Hence why they were "fascinated" by each other. But as soon as it happens, you realize that it was all in your head and that there is no real connection there.
But as soon as they hit the "street of fascination", so to speak, the fascination, the passion, fades away and it is no longer exciting and there is nothing but that superficial fascination that they initially had with each other. As the passion fades, it just turns into mindless, detached sex. And with all the memories, all the fantasies and dreams, it is
Robert Smith said that it’s about “the often cynical delights of exploring a new city nightlife; based loosely on one particular ‘band adventure’ in New Orleans 1985 – Bourbon Street, the cliche perhaps.”
Later he said that he wrote it because “I was thinking of Bourbon Street in New Orleans when I wrote it – I was getting ready to go there and I thought, What the fuck do I think I’m going to find? It’s about the incredulity that I could still be fooled into looking for a perfect moment.”
UNTILED
THE CURE
Hopelessly drift
In the eyes of the ghost again
Down on my knees
And my hands in the air again
Pushing my face in the memory of you again
But I never know if it's real
Never know how I wanted to feel
Never quite said what I wanted to say to you
Never quite managed the words to explain to you
Never quite knew how to make them believable
And now the time has gone
Another time undone…
Hopelessly fighting the devil
Futility
Feeling the moster
Climb deeper inside of me
Feeling him gnawing my heart away
Hungrily
I'll never lose this pain
Never dream of you again.
Andres Cabanillas
The pain of losing the love of your life, the love you were having, breaking in pain on the floor, kneeling with your hands pleading, not yet accepting everything that is happening to you.
Then you start to think what you did wrong, what words you would have had to say, what you should never have said. But that moment no longer exists, you relive those moments, but that time has disappeared, that opportunity is gone.
You feel the monster that looms and invades you, breaking you with pain, a dark sensation that oppresses you, that of its absence.
PICTURES OF YOU
I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures
Are all I can feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in
Holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
And screamed at the make-believe
Screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage
To let it all go
Remembering you fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white
So delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
Slow drowned
You were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes
But I never see anything
If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart
All my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart
My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world
That I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
All my pictures of you
It's about the loss of someone no matter the circumstances ... conjuring up photos of that person, their feeling, a deep love connection, or even someone you've been falling in love with. This perception that it narrates is beautiful, it is like observing someone through a wall.
A death, a break, whatever that loss is. You see photos and it's easy to think of these people as part of your life, it's like you're living in the past
Andres Cabanillas
Pictures of you is your own film passing before your eyes, a memory of many, many vivid images that remain inert in a daguerreotype, a photograph, an immortalized moment but that belongs to a past that leaves you with all your memories, deep feelings of love , darling, illusions, wishes. Each photo is a sequence of that life with that dear person, each photo contains all those feelings, many emotions.
THE SAME DEEP WATER AS YOU
THE CURE
Kiss me goodbye
Pushing out before I sleep
Can’t you see I try
Swimming the same deep water as you is hard
“The shallow drowned lose less than we”
You breathe
The strangest twist upon your lips
“And we shall be together… ”
“Kiss me goodbye
Bow your head and join with me”
And face pushed deep
Reflections meet
The strangest twist upon your lips
And disappear
The ripples clear
And laughing
Break against your feet
And laughing
Break the mirror sweet
“So we shall be together… ”
“Kiss me goodbye”
Pushing out before I sleep
It’s lower now and slower now
The strangest twist upon your lips
But I don’t see
And I don’t feel
But tightly hold up silently
My hands before my fading eyes
And in my eyes
Your smile
The very last thing before I go…
I will kiss you I will kiss you
I will kiss you forever on nights like this
I will kiss you I will kiss you
And we shall be together…
I think to me, it's clear that his lover is committing suicide and he is witnessing it, and at the same time, being baited or tempted into joining them. They don't want to deal with life after their lover is dead, so the whole song he is considering drowning himself as well, so they can be together.
"Kiss me goodbye
Pushing out before I sleep"
Is the narrator telling his lover he wants a kiss goodbye before he goes, but he can't pull himself a way really cause he knows she's going to drown herself.
"Kiss me goodbye
Bow your head and join with me"
And face pushed deep Reflections meet
The strangest twist upon your lips
And disappearThe ripples clear
And laughing Break against your feet
And laughing Break the mirror sweet
"So we shall be together"
In this verse, the lines with quotes around them, is his lover baiting him to bow his head (under the water = And face pushed deep) and kiss her so their reflections can meet.
The strangest twist upon your lips, has to be her disappointment that he isn't as willing to join her in this suicide kiss, for she is so willing and so ready. (And laughing Break the mirror sweet )Is him actually pulling away from her in the middle of the kiss cause she is trying to hold him down in the water with her, against his will. (Their reflections no longer meeting, break the mirror sweet). You see he's wresting with his conscience here for he had promised her he'd commit suicide right along with her, to prove his integrity and everlasting love for her and he now realizes he can't do it (Can't you see I try Swimming the same deep water as you is hard).
Living up to the idea of suicide to prove is everlasting love & commitment to her is becoming a harder pill for him to swallow then he thought, so to speak. He feels he is in over his head in terms of what he has promised. But is really contemplating doing it anyways cause she keeps baiting him with ( "So we shall be together... ").
"Kiss me goodbye"
Pushing out before I sleep
It's lower now and slower now
The strangest twist upon your lips
The "kiss me goodbye" in this verse is in quotations, unlike the kiss me goodbye in verse one. Which means the narrator is quoting someone other than himself, so this is his lover asking him to kiss her goodbye. It's lower now and slower now (Is her with her lips pouted ready for the kiss goodbye so she can again try and pull him under with her, and she is slower in her descent back down unto the water, cause is holding out hope he will go through with their agreement and join her finally for the final descent. The strangest twist upon your lips, is her expression of disarray when she realized he isn't going to go through with it & she is alone in this final descent out of this world. It's finally sinking in, the idea that she must go it alone.
But I don't see
And I don't feel
But tightly hold up silently
My hands before my fading eyes.
This is a great verse, that tell so much. Here he is saying I don't see and I don't feel, he can no longer see the disapproval in her expression (the strangest twist upon her lips) or feel her cause she has drowned deep in the water.
But tightly hold up silently
My hands before my fading eyes
And in my eyes
Your smile
The very last thing before I go
Even though he can't see her, he still has the memory of her drowning herself, and holds up his hands before his eyes cause at this point he has begun crying and then pictures her smile, that's the last thing about her he wants to remember (The very last thing before I go). The memory of her beautiful smile reflecting in the water, as it seems to provide some kind of solace for him during this extremely sad moment.
I will kiss you I will kiss you
I will kiss you forever on nights like this
I will kiss you I will kiss you
And we shall be together...
Picturing the smile, remembering their last kiss, makes him in his minds eye, picture kissing her forever...for she is dead now and during this verse he is holding her lifeless body and kissing her, despite the fact that she's dead, she is almost even more hauntingly beautiful to him in death and that's why he says I will kiss you forever on nights like this.

Well, I think Disintegration is a great and amazing album that across of the years has become to be considered as one of the most important albums inside gothic scene or new wave classic.
I can´t understand the fact of how one album so depressive and melancholic was truthly sucessfull!!
The album has lyrics very closer of the death, heartbreak, goodbyes forever, yearnings, of spite of this... the album sounds strong, complet, every instrument make it works very well for give us a great something dark sound.
Disintegration is without doubt one album, the last good close of the 80s.
